Knowing the operating time of a load/appliance is useful for a proper management of maintenance activity. But it is also fundamental to have this information in order to effectively manage your energy using a Energy Management System (EnMS).

In order to monitor the energy efficiency, as suggested from the ISO 50001 normative, it is necessary to make use of the Energy Performance Indicators (KPI or EnPI). Hence,it is not enough to measure just the consumption of energy when implementing an energy efficiency program. Rather, energy use must be monitored according to other key parameters related to the unit that is being analysed, such as:

  • The turnover
  • Quantity produced
  • Number of services rendered
  • The total effective functioning time of the load/appliance, etc.

Therefore, a very important requirement in this scenario is that all devices used for measuring must have the same time reference (synchronized clock). As an example, let's analyze the lighting system of an office.

With the latest energy analyzers from Electrex, namily the Exa and Kilo family (but also with the Femto family devices), not only are you able to measure the energy consumed but it is also possible to obtain and record the functioning time of the load/appliance being measured.

Using the powerful energy management software Energy Brain it is possible to activate, within the Electrex device, a partial time counter triggered every time the power consumption exceeds a certain threshold. This same counter can also be triggered by the ON/OFF state of an electrical contact via the inputs provided on the smart energy analyzer.

Why does this matter? Well now, after a significant time period (Such as a hour, day, week, month, season, year, etc.), it is possible to detect not only how much energy has been consumed for lighting but also the functioning time of this lighting system.

If energy analyzer is connected to a gateway data logger (Like the Yocto net , Kilo net , Exa net or Femto 70A net ) along with the "Upgrade 4You" option enabled, it is also possible to display on a web page a chart with both: the curve of the energy consumed and the effective functioning time synchronized (Referring to the same clock).

As shown in the image above, the chart can be displayed from any device with a browser (smartphone, tablet, PC, etc.) allowing users to have remote monitoring and management capabilities on their fingertips!
